Founder of Lotus Boards, Brian Westphal, is looking to bring hemp to the masses; one board at a time. After graduating from Cal Poly Pomona with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, the young entrepreneur is looking to encourage growth in the hemp industry by spreading his message via hemp plastic skateboards.
The board has been modeled after the Penny Cruiser deck, however the design aims to put feather-like weight at the forefront, whilst still maintaining enough support to provide a smooth and comfortable ride.
“Is different from a traditional deck in that it’s more used for beach cruising, getting around town or to class, and to carve hills. Relative to the Penny our board will have a greatly reduced carbon footprint, will be stronger, and most of all, made using hemp ‘In The USA’.”
Skateboards are just the beginning for Westphal; he believes hemp plastic to be a “game changing material” as an alternative to standard petro-plastics. “From plastics, to hempcrete, fuels, food, and textiles the future for industrial hemp has never looked brighter and we’re just at the tip of the iceberg.”
The company, whilst still negotiating with their hemp plastic manufacturer, hopes to launch the product on Kickstarter for Summer 2015.
