Hemp is something that is becoming ever increasingly popular as people start to realise the truly diverse potential of the plant. Many companies are now looking to use hemp as an alternative to a wide array of expensive and sometimes harmful materials. Now hemp could be taking to the skies in one of the most exciting new developments in hemp based materials.
North American based company Hempearth are currently producing the worlds first hemp plane using Carbon Fiber-like material made using hemp fibers. Not only will the aircraft be constructed of 75% hemp, but it will be powered by hemp biofuel! The production of fiberglass involves styrene being released into the atmosphere which is extremely harmful to the environment, but replacing fiberglass with the hemp based material will drastically reduce the companies carbon footprint.
